Hymn and Huh
Spirituality/Belief • Education • Music
In a nutshell: to explore the History (including philosophy, theology, and epistemology) behind hymns, to explain music Theory concepts that arise in hymnals, and to provide Study tips for singing hymns :)

Hear Ye; Hear Ye! 4 Updates :)

As Mr. David Tennant's incarnation of Doctor Who liked to say: "allons-y!"

  • 1/4. I'm continuing to explore Rumble & Locals settings so I can ensure this environment works optimally for all of us :)

  • 2/4. I'm upgrading my recording equipment-- I've got a new 4k-resolution Logitech web cam, I've got a new arm for the mic setup, and I should have a new Blue Yeti + headset by mid-February. (Well, technically, the Blue Yeti I'm getting looks Red-- so, perhaps we could call it a Purple Yeti? 😅 )

  • 3/4. In addition to balancing additional job interviews and the like, I'm pleased to announce that my research for the next episode (i.e. on 'We Praise Thee, O God') is coming along well! I've got a lot of content ready to share for the History part alone, and I'll be working on the (music) Theory and (singing) Study portions of that episode too. (As much as possible, I want to ensure that the content I share is edifying, educational, and excellent!) I'm hoping to finish filming and editing by this weekend, if God (aka: the Trinity/Triad^) permits.

Note^: I mention more resources within https://deopatriaelitteris.wordpress.com/2023/01/27/hymn-huh-ep-1-universal-music-duck-dynasty-mr-paul-vander-klay-mr-c-michael-patton-mr-boethius/ , but I'll briefly quote from https://www.oodegr.com/english/anatolikes/logos_n_tao.htm : "The Christian scriptures, when translated into Chinese, use the word 'Tao' to express the concept of 'Word,' or 'Logos' in the Greek. [...] It is said, that the Chinese are to the East, what the Greek are to the West. [...] Thus now it could be seen that the Tao/Logos is at the same time, One, Personal and Selfless. Lao Tzu for all his greatness, could not have seen that, without the knowledge of the Trinity. And this was only revealed in the 'Logos made flesh' who appeared in Palestine hundreds of years later. Indeed, Lao Tzu mysteriously opined that, 'The three produced all things.' Chinese philosopher and Taoist, Gi-ming Shien comments on this saying, that the 'three' represent 'the reconciliation of opposites,' and that the 'three is the principle of order'. So Lao Tzu, while not fully knowing the meaning of the Triad, never the less realized it to be a creative principle. [...] Certainly, if the early Christians had known of Lao Tzu, they would have honored him, as they honored the Greeks, (as well as the Hebrews it goes without saying) and recognized Christ as the Eternal Tao, as they recognized Him as the Divine Logos." So: where 'Western' Christians speak of The Christ Jesus as The Logos (Logic) who is within the Triunity of God, 'Eastern' Christians speak of Him as The Tao (Way) who is within the Triad of God.

  • 4/4. Although it may take me a bit to prep for these, I have some ambitions for starting other series (with other corresponding Rumble-Locals channels); I'll keep you posted. With Dr. John Vervaeke, I agree that we live within an epic 'Meaning Crisis' ( https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLND1JCRq8Vuh3f0P5qjrSdb5eC1ZfZwWJ )-- and I'd like to respond helpfully to this arena if I can. (Some examples of series ideas follow after the next sentence.) Moreover, I'd like to do more of the videos you'd like to see-- whatever they may be :)

-- {Example A} I'd like to do more Historical/Contemporary Biblical Studies and Theology videos-- kinda like the 1st Hymn & Huh episode, but better recorded and more meaty. I admire how Mr. Paul Vander Klay (via https://www.youtube.com/@PaulVanderKlay/videos ) continually explores connections between ideas and people of various backgrounds.

-- {Example B} I'd like to critique many essays in Dr. David H. Richter's 'The Critical Tradition: Classic Texts and Contemporary Trends' [ https://cloudflare-ipfs.com/ipfs/bafykbzaced6zkkbawgleuqrkf57lrhnrul7y4clhgxxvxmg2sllyfpoxsblsk?filename=David%20H.%20Richter%20-%20The%20Critical%20Tradition_%20Classic%20Texts%20and%20Contemporary%20Trends%203rd%20Ed.-Bedford__St.%20Martin%27s%20%282006%29.pdf ] far more carefully than my CSU-SM LTWR BA program [ https://catalog.csusm.edu/preview_program.php?catoid=1&poid=139&returnto=35 ]. I'm thinking of following in the footsteps of what Dr. Christopher Watkin did in his "Derrida, Foucault, and the Bible" series ( https://www.thegospelcoalition.org/course/derrida-foucault-bible/#course-introduction ) or like what Dr. Jordan B. Cooper does in his 'Makers of The Modern World' series ( https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLxaDcwyjYomz_-v55pBIQ2-SpG3HvJPlO ).

-- {Example C} Inspired by Mr. David J. Schlafer's "Surviving the Sermon: A Guide to Preaching for those who have to listen", I would like to interview Christian preachers and leaders from many backgrounds so that we can keep Christ-centric conversations flowing consistently-- i.e. so we can keep digesting, debating, and discussing sermons well beyond congregational meeting times during (say) Sundays and Wednesdays.

-- {Example D} I would love to hear what you've got to say too :) I'm down for live-streaming conversations with y'all if y'all are also game; or, if you'd like to talk privately, I'm also looking forward to such encounters!

As always, thank you for being you & thank you for reading!
